Raiven and her AMOUR Litter

14/6/2012

In April Raiven came into season and Brian and I came to a decision that we would give Raiven a chance for a litter as we had the time on our hands and to see how Raiven copes with being a ‘mummy’.

Our choice in a male lead us to Markku the sire based on the facts that he was a nice outcross (un-related), a lovely Black/Tan and White (Typical), passed all health tests, Clear of PRA, produced excellent temperaments in his previous litter (us even owning one of his son’s) and close in distance to reach. All boxes ticked I was happy to continue expecting a nice pedigree, healthy and ‘typical’ litter.

Raiven over the next 8weeks certainly put on the weight and I was expecting a nice sized litter . . .

On Tuesday June 12th as I was coming home from work I had a call from Brian saying he suspected Raiven’s labour and when I got home I confirmed that yep she was in her first stages . . . we weren’t expecting this until the weekend! I made a phone call to Raiven’s Breeder and my mentor Melissa Waters and she kept telling me it’s too early – but I still placed my bet that tonight would be the night. I took out the single mattress from the spare room and set it up beside the whelping area, preparing for a long night. Finally falling asleep around 10:30pm
On June 13th early hours of a Wednesday Raiven woke me at about 1am for a toilet walk with Raiven, came back in, she was still unsettled but quietened down until 3:30am where she was busting to go toilet again – half a dozen peddles later she raced back to her whelping box and was very unsettled I sat beside the box and noted her convulsions. Raiven kept getting out of the whelping box and climbing into my lap, so I went and sat in the whelping box and at 4am Raiven started shredding her newspaper and crying and trying to find a comfy spot.

A made the ‘wake up’ call to MelissaW and told her Raiven was ready and to stay on phone stand by if I needed her. At 4:18am my first puppy was born into the world with a final scream from Raiven, a boy, black and tan.
Second puppy a Black and Tan bitch born at 4:41am.
Third puppy a bitch – BLUE and Tan born at 5:05am – I nearly fell over when I saw her – I was totally amazed at this rare colour let alone in my litter!
Fourth puppy bitch born at 5:32am Black and Tan
Fifth puppy a boy born at 5:39am Black, Tan and White
Sixth puppy a girl born at 6:01am Black and Tan
… more puppies? Yep …
Seventh puppy a boy born at 6:24am BLUE and Tan – Oh my!! Wait he isn’t breathing! Scream puppy please . . . Yes! All was good (phew!)
Eighth puppy a dark girl born at 6:43am Black and Tan, she was born the same as the seventh puppy . . . took a little while to get her breathing and screaming.

Was relieved to find Raiven had stopped at eight puppies - 3dogs and 5bitches.

After every puppy was born a quick text was sent to MelissaW saying sex and colour - when the Blue girl was born and I texted “I got a BLUE bitch!!” her response was “Blue?? What do you mean Blue?? Is she not breathing?” I replied “No she’s fine, she’s BLUE” ….. “huh?” … “she is BLUE and TAN!” with an image. Oh the Surprise! LOL

Raiven’s sire is a Blue and Tan – so I knew there could be a possibility of Raiven containing the gene, but we had no idea that Markku (the sire) had the Blue gene, but we were aware that his litter brother was is a Blue and Tan. The puppies in this litter confirmed for us that both the Sire and Dam have the gene.

The litter is healthy and well and Raiven is being a fantastic mommy. It was an amazing experience and I thought it was a beautiful moment to watch and be a part of.
